Office of the Superintendent
The Halifax Regional School Board appointed Elwin LeRoux as the board's new superintendent in October, 2013.
Mr. LeRoux has served in various positions within the HRSB for the past 25 years, including teacher, vice-principal, principal, supervisor and coordinator of school administration. Immediately prior to his appointment as superintendent, Mr. LeRoux provided leadership to the HRSB as the senior staff advisor.
A native of Glace Bay, Mr. LeRoux completed an undergraduate degree in Science at St. Francis Xavier University and a Bachelor of Education at Saint Mary's University. He subsequently received two master's degrees in education from Saint Mary's. Mr. LeRoux has also co-instructed various university courses in the education programs at both St. FX and Mount Saint Vincent University.

Superintendent's Awards of Excellence
The Superintendent's Awards of Excellence are one component of the overall Employee Recognition Program approved by the board in June, 2008. Former Superintendent Carole Olsen wanted to enhance the board's recognition efforts by ensuring employees were acknowledged, not only when they retired, but also throughout their years of employment with the board. In 2008, the Milestone Awards were launched; in 2009, the Long Service Milestone Awards were established; and finally, the Awards of Excellence Program in 2010. Employees are invited to nominate fellow employees who are demonstrating excellence in supporting schools and students.
Nominations are accepted in the following three categories:
- Award of Excellence in Teaching
- Excellent Support Staff Award
- Excellence in Leadership Award
Every day we see excellent examples of how our leaders, our teachers and those who support education are making a difference in student learning. These awards honour exceptional contributions to education and are open to all employees of the Halifax Regional School Board. If you know of someone who would be a good candidate for these awards, you are encouraged to put their name forward.
Check out the criteria and nomination forms in MyHRSB under Document Depot or pick them up from a Director or Principal. If you require more information about your nomination, please contact Margaret Berringer at 464-2000 Ext. 2215 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
Finalists are selected by the Superintendent and a panel of community leaders each spring and honored at an awards celebration in August. All nominations are acknowledged by the Superintendent with a special nomination award.
