Capital Projects

The Halifax Regional School Board (HRSB) operates 136 schools throughout Halifax Regional Municipality. The quality of school facilities contributes to a safe and supportive learning environment for our students and has a direct affect on the ability to effectively offer the Public School Program.

In any given year, there are a number of major capital projects underway within the HRSB. New school construction and major renovations are managed by the provincial Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. Capital Repair projects are managed by the HRSB Operations Services (Operations) Department.

Funding requests for new school construction and major additions/alterations (capital construction) are approved by HRSB Governing Board and submitted to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD) for consideration. These projects cost in excess of $1 million. The most recently submitted list was March 2016. To review the report to the Governing Board, click here. To review the approved minutes of the March 30, 2016 meeting, click here.

In addition, EECD allocates funding for projects costing between $150,000 – $1 million through a capital repairs funding program. Capital repairs projects include roof repairs, window replacements, gym improvements, paving and upgrades to program spaces.
