New Dartmouth South Academy
In November 2012, the Premier of Nova Scotia announced a new Primary to Grade 9 school would be built in south Dartmouth to replace Southdale-North Woodside Elementary and Prince Arthur Junior High. To read the government news release announcing the new school, click here.
Part of the process for the building of a new school involves a site selection process. To lead the process, a Site Selection Committee (SSC) is formed and the committee identifies three possible locations for construction of a new school. These locations are presented in a report to the Governing Board for approval and submission to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD).
The SSC submitted its report to the Governing Board in September 2013. To review the SSC report, click here. The HRSB approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the provincial government.
April 16, 2015: The Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development announced the new school would be built on the property adjacent to Prince Arthur Junior High. To read the news release, click here.
May 6, 2015: The HRSB announced that Prince Arthur Junior High would close at the end of June to facilitate the construction of the new school.
May 18, 2015: The HRSB announced that grade 7 and 8 students would attend Southdale-North Woodside during the construction and grade 9 students would attend Dartmouth High. A transition committee would be formed immediately to plan for this move.
The Transition Committee met three times in May and June 2015. Click below to read their bulletins.
School Steering Team (SST)
The School Steering Team serves an advisory role in the design of the school. The committee is asked to provide input to the provincial government for consideration during the design process for the new school. Final decisions on the design of the school rests with the provincial government, as represented by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.
SST minutes are approved at the next meeting and are then posted to this site shortly thereafter. For example, minutes from the April SST meeting were approved at the May 7 meeting.
