The Halifax Regional School Board (HRSB) supports research activities in its schools and departments and is committed to fostering positive relations with educational researchers. Anyone interested in conducting research involving HRSB schools, staff, students or parents is required to fill out an Application for Approval of Research. In the application the researcher must demonstrate that they are following the guidelines and criteria outlined in the documentation provided in the links below. These guidelines and criteria apply to:
All research activities that take place on school premises during regular school hours
- Recruitment of any study participants from HRSB school communities (e.g., teachers, students, staff) for research activities that occur off HRSB sites outside of school hours
It is important to ensure all necessary documentation is included with your application. Please note that incomplete application forms will not be considered. All requests to conduct research are reviewed by the HRSB Research Committee and senior administration which meets four times a year to evaluate applications. Therefore, researchers will need to provide completed applications with all documentation to the board no later than the following dates:

Scenario 1: For research that involves students, parents, teachers and/or other HRSB staff and will occur at school sites and departments during regular school hours. Please choose Application for Approval of Research Form A.
Scenario 2: For research that involves students, parents, teachers and/or other HRSB staff and will occur off school sites outside of school hours. Please choose Application for Approval of Research Form B.
