New High School to replace JL Ilsley

In January 2017, the provincial government announced, as part of the 2017-2018 Capital Plan, a new high school would be built to replace JL Ilsley High School. Details on when the new school will open have not been finalized.

Below is an outline of some of the processes that occur from the time a project is announced until completion:

Site Selection

Part of the process for the building of a new school involves a site selection process. To lead the process, a Site Selection Committee (SSC) is formed and the committee identifies up to three possible locations for construction of a new school. These locations are presented in a report to the Governing Board for approval and submission to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD).

The SSC held their first meeting on May 2, 2017.

The SSC held a community engagement session on June 6, 2017.

The SSC submitted its report to the Governing Board in July 2017. To review the SSC report, click here.

At a Special Board Meeting on July 12, 2017, the Governing Board approved the recommendations of the SSC and have submitted them to the provincial government for a final decision. To view a map of the three sites, click here

SSC Agendas

SSC Minutes

SSC minutes are approved at the next meeting and are then posted to this site shortly thereafter. For example, minutes from the May 2 SSC meeting were approved at the May 9 meeting.

School Steering Team (SST)

The School Steering Team serves an advisory role in the design of the school. The committee will be asked to provide input to the provincial government for consideration during the design process for the new school. Final decisions on the design of the school rests with the provincial government, as represented by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.

School Name

Naming a new school facility is the responsibility of the governing board. In accordance with the Naming School Facilities policy, the principal or principal designate will identify and lead a consultation process to name the school.

The process will include a school organization such as a School Advisory Council, Parent/Teacher Association, School Steering Team and the public. Also, student input, appropriate for the age level served by the school should be a significant part of the process.
