ToimprovestudentachievementandpersonalsuccessGoal1InNeilFishersgradesevenmathclassatBicentennialSchoolstudentshavetheopportunitytoworkindependentlythenreportbackasagroupinacircleformaontofacilitatestudentinteracon.Studentsexamineeachothersworkmakesuggesonsanddiscusshowtheyworkedthroughtheirmathproblems.ThisstyleofteachingwasinuencedbyNeilsprofessionallearningaboutstudentssharingworkandacngaspeermentors.SeehowstudentsmakemathclassinacircleworkFindinguniqueopportuniestoengagestudentsinanysubjectisimportantforstudentsuccess.StudentsinthisgradeninelanguageartsclassatParkWestSchoolhavetheopportunitytoextheircricalthinkingskillsexam-ineatextinterprettheirthoughtsandideasandparcipateingroupworkallwhilelearningaboutamanonaniceberg.CheckoutLornaBenneandherstudentsdiscussingtheimpactofelectronicmediaonsocialcauses.StudentsinthisgradeoneclasslearnaboutfundamentalmaththeoriesinaveryfunwaybycounngfrogsAndreaBankshasstudentsworkingonaddionandsubtraconequaonsthroughmathstories.Studentsaregivenmaterialstoworkwithandtheopportunitytosharetheirndingsandunderstandingwiththeirpeers.Tondouthowmanyfrogsjumpedotherockcheckouttheirclasshardatwork Goal1TheOponsandOpportuniesProgramO2isoeredin15highschoolsthroughouttheHRSB.ThisisthesecondyearforHalifaxWestHighSchoolDuncanMacMillanHighSchoolMusquodoboitRuralHighSchoolandColeHarbourDistrictHighSchool.Asaresultofthisparcipaonwewillseeanother70studentsinGrade11O2havetheopportunitytolearnthroughCooperaveEducaonplacements.StudentsinO2experiencelearninginthecommunitythroughawiderangeofworkshopssimulaonscareerfairsjobshadowscoopplacementssafetytrainingeldtripstoursandmore.StudentsinO2willhavetheopportunitytoexploremanycareerpathwayssuchaslawenforcementhealthandhumanservicesskilledtradesculinaryartsbusinessandtechnologyandeducaontonameafew.Teachersandstudentsalsobrainstormideasforanumberofservicelearningprojectswherestudentsnotonlymeetcurriculumoutcomesandenrichpersonalskillsandlearningbutsupporttheirschoolandhomecommunityinthatprocess.Itisanexcingopportunityforover740studentsenrolledinO2astheyconnueontheirjourneywiththeirlearningandcareerexploraon.ToimprovestudentachievementandpersonalsuccessOptionsandOpportunitiesHavingtheopportunitytosharethoughtsandideaswithyourclassisveryimportantatallgradelevels.Ingrade11advancedEnglishSaraJeansmakessureherclassisreadytodojustthat.Fromreadingpoetryaloudtodiscussingtheirworkonin-classacviesthesestudentsaresharingalltheme.WhileallthatishappeningSarandsmetotalkwithstudentsone-on-onegivingthemfeedbackontheirwork.HavealookinsidethisSirJohnA.Macdonaldclassroom. Goal1ToimprovestudentachievementandpersonalsuccessInJuneof2014O2schoolsinHRSBparcipatedinprovincialServiceLearningweek.ServiceLearningprovidesstudentswiththeopportunitytoapplyskillsandknowledgeinthedeliveryofcommunityprojectswhilemeengcurriculumoutcomesintheircourses.ServiceLearningopportuniesmaylookdierentfromschooltoschoolbuttheyallhavecertainelementsincommonmeaningfulworkcivicresponsibilitydiscoverycollaboraonreeconandpartnerships.SeveraliniaveswereundertakenacrosstheHRSBsomeofwhichincludedAuburnDriveHighSchoolstudentsconnectedwiththelocalBoysandGirlsClubtodesignamuralanddorepairworkattheirsite.ColeHarbourDistrictHighSchoolstudentswereinvolvedincreangacommunityfoodgarden.EasternShoreDistrictHighSchoolstudentsworkedinpartnershipwiththeMusquodoboitHarbourTrailsAssociaontodesignandconstrucngkilometremarkersfortheAdmiralLakeTrail.Thestudentsthenworkedwiththetrailassociaontoinstallthesignsalongthetrailattheappropriatepoints.StudentsatHalifaxWestHighSchoolbuiltdollhousesthatweredonatedtotheIWKHospital.Thestudentshadtheopportunitytodelivertheseinpersonandweretreatedtoatourofthesitetolearnaboutcareeropportuniesinhealthcare.StudentsatMusquodoboitRuralHighSchoolbuiltanoutdoorpicnicandstudyareaforstudentsandstaThewholeschoolatPrinceAndrewHighSchoolparcipatedinawashertosstournamenthostedbyO2studentswhobuiltandsoldthegamesatvariousschoolevents.Proceedsmorethan2000weredonatedtoRonaldMcDonaldHouse.ServiceLearning StudentAssessmentProvincialandboardassessmentsarevaluableforclassroomteacherstheschoolandtheHalifaxRegionalSchoolBoardHRSBasawhole.Theseassessmentsinformclassroominstruconinuenceschoolimprovementgoalsinmathemacsandliteracyandhelpschoolsidenfystudentswhomayneedaddionalsupport.TheHRSBandtheDepartmentofEducaonandEarlyChildhoodDevelopmentEECDalsousetheseassessmentresultsalongwithothersourcesofinformaontoinformdecisionsandnextstepsrelatedtomathemacsandliteracyprofessionaldevelopmentforteachersandadministrators.Studentsingrade2EnglishandFrenchImmersionProgramparcipatedinareadingassessmentdevelopedbytheHalifaxRegionalSchoolBoard.Thisreadingassessmentdetermineshowwellstudentsaredevelopingstrategiesneededtomeettheprovincialgrade2readingviewingoutcomes.Studentsingrades346and8parcipatedinprovincialliteracyandmathemacsassessments.TheseassessmentsaredevelopedbytheProgramofLearningAssessmentforNovaScoamanagedbytheEvaluaonServicesdivisionoftheEECD.Inthisreportyouwillseeatwo-yearcomparisonforallassessmentswiththeexceponofgrade4mathwhichwasassessedfortherstmein2013-2014.ThereadingwringandmathemacsassessmentsdemonstratehowwellourstudentsinEnglishandFrenchImmersionprogramsareperformingatkeystagesintheirdevelopment.TheprovincialelementaryassessmentsarewrienattheendofSeptemberearlyOctoberandarebasedonthepreviousyearscurriculumoutcomeexpectaons.Thegrade8assessmentiswrieninearlyJuneandincludesquesonsthatreectwhattheprovincewouldexpectstudentstoknowattheendofgrade8.Toviewtheresultsclickontheassessmentlistedbelow.LiteracyGrade2LiteracyEnglishandFrenchGrade3ReadingandWringGrade6ReadingandWringGrade8ReadingandWringMathGrade4MathGrade6MathGrade8Math Goal2Tomaximizeexemplaryteachingpracticestosupporthighqualityinstruction.TheHRSBisproudoftheprofessionallearningourstaundertakeseveryyear.Staparcipateinprofessionallearningopportuniesinavarietyofwaysfromtakinguniversityorcollegecoursestoaendingsessionsandworkshopswiththeirpeers.TheHRSBconnuestoprovideprofessionaldevelopmenttoschooladministratorsontheeecvepraccesofprofessionallearningcommuniesPLCs.Teacherteamsworkingcollaboravelyreviewstudentassessmentdataeecveinstruconalstrategiesandengageinproblemsolvingtosupportindividualstudentlearning.Thiscollaboraveworkprovidesthemwithanopportunitytolearnfromeachotheraboutwhatisworkingandtobuildontheirknowledgeofeecveinstruconandassessmentpracces.TheschooladministratorisateammemberworkingwithPLCstoimproveteachingandlearning.Asasystemwearelearningthepowerofcollaboraveculturesinchangingteacherpraccetobestsupportthelearnersinourschools.PLCsallowteacherstoworktogethertoimprovepraccewhichulmatelyimpactsonstudentachievement.ThestructuresareinplacetosupportcollaboraoneachelementaryclassroomteacherandeachsecondarymathliteracyteacherhascollaboravemeforPLCworkbuiltintotheirweeklyschedule. ProfessionalLearningThroughouttheyearincludingsummerbreakteachersandschoolstaparcipateinavarietyofprofessionaldevelopmentsessions.SchoolsareadopngProfessionalLearningCommunieswiththeirstaallowingprofessionalgrowthtohappenamongcolleaguesattheschoollevel.Therearealsoprovincialandregionalprofessionaldevelopmentdayswherestahastheopportunitytolearnaboutdierenttopicsrangingfromtechnologytolanguageartstomathemacs.TheHRSBhasalsooeredculturalprociencyandculturallyrelevantteachingprofessionaldevelopmentforschoolsta.Over50newteachersparcipatedinsessionstodiscussprovidingequitableandinclusivelearningenvironmentsandinstruconalpracces.Therearemanyvaluableopportuniesforprofessionallearning.Approximately30HRSBteachersalsoparcipatedintheEECDITSummerCampatSt.FXUniversityinAngonish.HRSBstamembersSandyMacDougallandMarioEleherosfacilitatedtwoworkshopsaboutappsfortheclassroomteachingandlearningwiththewebandsocialmediaintheclassroom.Therewereavarietyofothersessionsoeredcoveringtopicssuchascloudstorageanddigitalcizenship. DENGuru-SandyMacDougallInMay2014the2014DiscoveryEducatorNetworkDENGurusfromacrossCanadaandtheUnitedStateswereannounced.TheonlyCanadiantoberecognizedwasHRSBsveryownSandyMacDougall.SandyistheLeaderTechnologyEducaonatRegionalOceandsupportsschoolsandeducatorsinintegrangtechnologyintotheirclassrooms.Sandywaschosenspecicallyforhisdemonstratedexpersespiritofcollaboraonandadvocacyfortheintegraonofdigitalmediatosupportstudentlearning.EducatorsselectedbyDENhavedemonstratedtheirexperseinoneormoreteachingareassuchasdierenatedinstruconandproject-basedlearningandhavebeenrecognizedasadvocatesformeaningfultechnologyintegraonintocurriculum.Theseeducatorsdisnguishthemselvesasleadersintheirworkbychangingteachingmethodswithtechnology.CanadasOutstandingPrincipal-AmyMacLeodInJanuaryAmyMacLeodprincipalofAshLeeJeersonElementarywasnamedoneofCanadasoutstandingprincipalsbyTheLearningPartnership.Shewasoneof40principalstobehonouredthisyearandtheonlyonefromNovaScoa.Candidatesforthisawardarechosenusingthefollowingcriteriacharacteriscsofoutstandingprincipalsevidenceofpartnershipswithparentsandcommunityapersonalstoryillustrangsuccessfulchangeandinnovaonthatresultedinimprovedstudentachievementandcorrespondingleersofsupport.Amyisknownasaninstruconalleaderandforbuildingstrongrelaonshipswithstudentsstaandparents.Sheexempliestheboardsmissiontoprovideahighqualityeducaonforeverystudenteveryday.TheHRSBhasincredibleeducatorsandschoolstaworkingeachdaytoimprovethelivesofourstudents.Therearealsostaattheregionalocelevelwhooenworkbehindthescenestosupportbothstudentsandsta.Thesearejustafewexamplesofstawhohavebeenrecognizedfortheirexemplaryservice.EmployeeRecognition SuperintendentsAwardsofExcellenceDuringtheAugustAdministratorsmeengrecipientsoftheSuperintendentsAwardsofExcellencereceivedtheirawards.Thenalseleconforthe2014SuperintendentsAwardsofExcellencewasmadebyaSeleconPanelofSchoolBoardandCommunityLeaders.Numerousthoughulsubmissionsweremadebyschoolsandstafromacrosstheregion.AllthosewhowerenominatedreceivedaNominaonAwardintheformofaplaqueandacongratulatoryleerfromtheSuperintendentforbeingnominatedbycolleaguesandpeersfortheirexceponalcontribuon.ExcellenceinLeadershipAwardJoanneSymsSupervisorSchoolAdministraonMarleneBroderickProgramServicesFacilitatorStudentServicesAwardofExcellenceinTeachingCandraKaiserGrade23TeacherBeaverBankKinsacElementarySchoolExcellentSupportStafAwardSchoolBasedSusanShawEducaonalProgramAssistantCaldwellRoadElementarySchoolL-RCandraKaiserMarleneBroderickSusanShawJoanneSymsandElwinLeRoux ContinuousSchoolImprovementConnuousSchoolImprovementCSIistheprocessthatallschoolsintheHRSBusetoguidetheirschoolimprovementwork.AttheverycoreoftheCSIprocessisstudentlearningandachievement.ThequesonsaskedduringtheprocessencouragetheCSICommieetypicallymadeupoftheprincipalteachersandschoolstaandoenparentsguardianstolookatwhattheirstudentsneedtosucceed.TheHRSBCSImodelislaidoutoveraveyeartermandisdesignedtoprovideschoolswithmeforreeconandself-assessment.Italsoencouragesinformedplanningdevelopmentofcommonunderstandingprofessionallearninginserviceofstudentsandprovidesanopportunitytomonitorprogressovermeforbothstudentsandteachers.IntheCSIframeworkprofessionallearningcommuniesworktogethertoimplementtheirplanandcontributetotheoverallsuccessofschoolimprovement.EngaginginProfessionalLearningCommuniesPLCsteachersfocusonstudentlearningandconnuouslyworktoidenfyandaddressgapsinachievementforallstudentsandorspecicgroupsofstudents.Thison-goingworkisgroundedinacycleofinquiryinvolvingclassroomassessmentandinstruconandprofessionallearning.Thisiswhatwemeanwhenwerefertoprofessionallearningcommuniesastheenginethatdrivesschoolimprovement.HowareHRSBschoolsimprovingEveryHRSBschoolisfocusingonconnuousschoolimprovement.VisittheSchoolReportsseconofthisreporttolearnhowyourchildsschoolisimproving.Schoolsidenedasimprovingschoolshavegathereddatatodemonstrateimprovementintheirgoalareas.HRSBschoolsareinvolvedinave-yearcyclewhichbeginswithgoalidencaoninyearoneandconcludeswithareviewinyearvetodeterminethelevelofimprovementtheschoolhasachieved.In2013-201433HRSBschoolswererecognizedasimprovingschools.In2014-2015anothergroupofschoolswillparcipateinthereviewprocess.ThereisbothquantaveandqualitavedatathatshowstheCSIprocesshashelpedschoolshelpstudentstoreachhigherlevelsofachievement.HRSBschoolswillconnuetheirschoolimprovementworktoensurethatimprovedstudentachievementisarealityforallstudents.Eachschooldevelopstheirownsetofgoalsanddetermineshowtheyaregoingtoachieveimprovement.Everyimprovementjourneyisdierentandeachschoolisdemonstrangimprovementindierentways.Goal3Toachieveequitablelearningopportunitiesforallstudents CSIintheirownwords...TheCSIprocesshashelpedteachersdenelearningneedsthroughmeaningfulassessmentinquiryandanalysisofdataspecictoourschool.Thegoalsthatwerechosenaredirectlyconnectedtoourstudentsandtheirspecicneeds.ThemostimportantpartofourCSIstoryisthatofteacherlearning.Teachersareseeingmoreandmorethatweareteachingstudentsandthecurriculumissimplythevehicle.Teachershavedevelopedacondenceinthecontextandknowledgeofwhostudentsareaswellaswhotheyareasteachers.Teachersarenotonlyinvestedinthestudentswithintheirclassroomtheyareinvestedinallstudentsinthebuildings.-JohnMacNeilElementarySchoolLookingatourschoolstudentsurveydatawecanseethatthestudentsatAshLeeJeersonSchoolgainedcondenceintheircomprehensionofnon-contexts.Whencomparingourinternalassessmentresultswecanseethatthestudentshaveprogressedandtheiracademicachievementhasimproved.Moreoverteachersarecollaborangmorefrequentlytostrengthentheirpraccethroughgreaterunderstanding.OverallAshLeeJeersonhasdemonstratedgrowthinstudentachievementinliteracyandmath.Teachersinstruconalpracceshaveconnuedtodevelopensuringtheindividuallearningstylesandneedsofourstudentsaremet.AsweconnuetoimprovestudentperformancethroughtheprocessofCSIwelookforwardtoextendingtheacademicsuccessofalllearnersatAshLeeJeersonSchool.-AshLeeJefersonSchoolAsanimprovingschooltheCSIgoalshavemaintainedourfocusandpromotedincreasedteachercollaboraonandreecveclassroompraccesoverthelastthreeyears.Throughoutthecourseofthelastthreeyearsthequalityofprofessionaldevelopmentaroundinstruconandassessmentwastakentoanotherlevel.AllteacherswereinvolvedintargetedPDsessionstosupportstrategiesoutlinedintheplantoenhancetheirlearningwithrespecttotheschoolgoals.Teachersalsoreceivedculturalprociencyandculturallyresponsiveteachingtraininginresponsetoclosingtheachievementgap.InrelaontoclassroominstrucontherehavebeenchangesthathaveoccurredduetoourCSIgoals.Insteadofposingaproblemandleadingstudentstowardsonestrategythatcouldbeusedtosolvetheproblemteachersaremoreopentogivingstudentsmetoworktogethertocomeupwithstrate-giestoacceptmanysuggesonsandtesttheirvalidity.-DartmouthHighSchool Goal3ToachieveequitablelearningopportunitiesforallstudentsSelf-IdenticationSelf-idencaonisimportanttoourschoolsystemandtoourstudents.Itisessenaltoknowwhoourstudentsareandwhichcommuniesweserve.ForanumberofyearswehaveengagedinourSelf-IdencaonIniavetohelpusunderstandhowourdemographicsarechangingandhowbesttosupportourstudentsandschools.ThisbecameapriorityfortheHRSBtodevelopabeerunderstandingofourlearnersandtheirbackgroundswhichcaninformpracceinourclassroomsandschools.Schoolshaveconnuedtofocusonself-idencaoniniaveswithintheirsites.December2013datarevealedthat74ofprimarystudentshadself-idenedasignicantincreasefromthe44reportedinSeptember2013.AlsotheDecember2013datashowedthat75ofallgradePrimaryto12studentshadself-idenedcomparedto28inSeptember2013.Inaddiontotheongoingdiscussionsatprincipalandvice-principalmeengsself-idencaonhasalsobeenafocusofprofessionaldevelopmentfornewprincipalsinrelaontothestudentregistraonprocess.Theycoveredtheimportanceofinsuringallprimarystudentsandnewstudentsregisteringaremadeawareoftheimportanceofself-idencaonandareinvitedandsupportedindoingso.Overmewehavegatheredvaluableinformaonthatisassisngusindeterminingtheallocaonofresourcesandpersonneltobestsupporttheachievementofallstudents.Weconnuetoencourageallparentsandstudentstoself-idenfy.WehavealsoencouragedHRSBstatoself-idenfyasweareworkingtorecruitandretainstareecngthediversityofthestudentpopulaon.
